Prosecutors in New York are expected to file new charges against former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, over the alleged torture of American citizens held in custody by Venezuelan authorities.

The new charges relate to the detention of more than a dozen American citizens in Venezuelan prisons during Maduro's rule, according to people familiar with the investigation. An announcement on the new charges could be made as soon as Thursday.

Investigators are also considering the possibility of charging other individuals suspected of involvement in the torture of American citizens.

Maduro and Flores were captured during a US military operation at the presidential palace in Caracas in January. They have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit narcoterrorism and other crimes and are currently being held in New York without the possibility of parole.

Flores is expected to appear in court on Thursday, where her lawyer is expected to request that she be placed under house arrest before the trial begins.

Meanwhile, Maduro's lawyer is challenging the legality of his arrest and arguing that the former president enjoys immunity, as the actions he is accused of allegedly occurred while he was in office.
