The United States has officially asked Russia for more information about the death of a laboratory technician at a plague research institute in the Irkutsk region of Siberia.

According to Russian media, 28-year-old Darya Shipilova may have been infected with pneumonic plague after a test tube broke in a laboratory. The reports also said that up to 200 people who may have had contact with her have been placed in quarantine.

Russian authorities have denied these claims.

Health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said that documents circulating online about taking special measures against the plague are not official and that the published information is false.

The governor of Irkutsk has also denied that the woman died of the plague. He said the woman died of pneumonia, and the final cause of death has not yet been determined. According to authorities, post-mortem tests have not shown any signs of plague or microorganisms that could be linked to her work in the laboratory.

However, the issue has drawn the attention of US and international authorities. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as well as the World Health Organization, have called on Russia to provide more information and transparency on the case.

US President Donald Trump said he would speak to Vladimir Putin about the issue soon. He said the US was closely monitoring the situation and that more information could be forthcoming in the coming days.

The WHO said Russia had informed it that no cases of plague had been recorded in the Irkutsk region. However, the organization's director, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, asked for more information about the pneumonia case.

Plague is a bacterial disease that occurs in several forms. The pulmonary form is particularly dangerous and can spread from one person to another through the respiratory tract.

Meanwhile, an international conference on plague and infectious diseases is scheduled to take place in Irkutsk on October 21-22. Organizers have clarified that the conference is not related to the death of the laboratory worker.
