Henry B. Kagan and Kenso Soai are the winners of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, for their discoveries on nonlinear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the prize in Stockholm, recognizing the work of two chemists on a more than century-old scientific problem: how homochirality can spontaneously emerge in chemical reactions.

Kagan, born in France, is affiliated with the University of Paris-Sud, while Soai, 95 and originally from Japan, is a professor at the Tokyo University of Science.

The chairman of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, Heiner Linke, described the reactions developed by the two scientists as "spectacular", emphasizing their importance for understanding how asymmetry can be created in chemical processes.

This year's Nobel Prize comes with a prize of 12 million Swedish kronor, about $1.2 million, which is divided among the laureates.

The Nobel Prizes continue this week. After the Chemistry Prize, the Literature Prize will be announced on Thursday, while the Peace Prize will be awarded on Friday. The Economics Prize will be announced on Monday.
