A new drug has managed to repair the damage caused by stroke. The drug called NVG-291-R has been tested on animals and has been successful, and now experiments on humans will also begin.
According to researchers, this drug is able to repair stroke damage through two mechanisms.
On the one hand, it creates new connections between neurons, while on the other hand, it stimulates the migration of new neurons from stem cells, exactly where the damage occurred.
Also, this treatment has been successful even when the treatment started 7 days after the stroke, i.e. very late, while most of the therapies used to date must be injected within a few hours.
The study will continue, while doctors explain that the effect will also be evaluated in cases of spinal cord injuries, or in Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis.
The study has been published in the international scientific journal Cell Reports by a group of researchers from the two American universities of Cincinnati and Western Reserve.
