If you often experience the sensation that you have something in your eye, this may be a sign that you are suffering from a corneal ulcer. Also known as keratitis, it is an open sore on the cornea, which is the visible layer above the iris.

Experts advise seeking medical attention as soon as possible if you suspect you have a corneal ulcer, as it can lead to complete vision loss if left untreated. "Corneal ulcer is a medical emergency. Without treatment, it can spread to the rest of your eye and you can lose some or all of your vision in a short time. You may also have a hole in your cornea, scarring, cataracts or glaucoma."

If treated, the eye usually heals in two to three weeks. However, the WedMD adds: "If you have vision problems due to scarring from a corneal ulcer, you may need a corneal transplant."

Other signs of a corneal ulcer include:

•Redness

•Strong pain

• Tears

•Pus or thick discharge from your eye

•Blurry vision

•Pain when looking at bright lights

•Swollen eyelids

•A round white spot on your cornea.

An ulcer or cornea is usually caused by an infection.
