President-elect Donald Trump could be decisive in ending the 34-month war with Russia.
This was stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with Ukrainian state television, also mentioning that the priority is to stabilize the front line at the beginning of the new year.
"Trump can be decisive. For us, this is the most important thing. His qualities are really there. He can be decisive in this war. He is able to stop Putin or, to put it more accurately, help us stop Putin. He is able to do this ," Zelensky said.
Zelensky also said that Putin is afraid of negotiations because they would be tantamount to a defeat for Russia. Among other things, he said that achieving a just peace for Ukraine means receiving solid security guarantees from its allies, membership in the European Union and receiving an invitation to join the NATO alliance, a notion rejected by Moscow.
"Of course, I would like President Trump's proposed plan to coincide with our point of view. It cannot be otherwise. We are Ukraine and it is our independence, our land and our future. Of course, any security guarantee without the United States is a weak security guarantee for Ukraine," Zelensky said.
Among other things, he stated that new elections could not be held as long as the state of emergency due to the war existed, but said that he would consider running again once conditions allowed.
The Ukrainian president also said he hopes the Trump administration will quickly establish contacts with Russia. Putin has said Moscow is open to talks, but they must take into account Russia's achievements in the war and the annexation of four Ukrainian regions.
