The person driving a Tesla Cybertruck that exploded outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas was a US special forces soldier and shot himself before the explosion, according to US officials.
Las Vegas police have identified Matthew Alan Livelsberger, 37, of Colorado Springs as the driver of the vehicle, which he rented more than 800 miles away and took to the Trump Hotel in Nevada.
Livelsberger's cause of death was suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Clark County coroner.
Seven people were injured when the vehicle filled with gas cylinders, burning fireworks and fuel exploded.
The explosion occurred hours after the New Orleans event on New Year's Day, which caused 15 deaths.
Livelsberger traveled in the Cybertruck into the city on Wednesday morning, less than two hours before the explosion.
Parked in front of the hotel near a glass entrance, the vehicle began emitting smoke from inside and then exploded. Authorities said they have not yet determined a motive for the incident.
Investigators found a military ID, a passport, two semi-automatic pistols, fireworks, an iPhone, a smartwatch and several credit cards in Livelsberger's name.
The driver was identified by investigators through two tattoos.
Police had tracked his movements using a number of photos during the trip from Denver, Colorado to Nevada. The driver had stopped to charge his Tesla and was the only one identified by authorities as driving a Cybertruck.
Matthew Alan Livelsberger served in the Green Berets, an elite force specialized in combating terrorism abroad and training partner forces, the U.S. military said in a statement. He had been a part of the U.S. military since 2006, with a long career that included two missions in Afghanistan and service in Ukraine, Tajikistan, Georgia and Congo.
