Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky fired the chiefs of all recruitment centers in all regions of the country on Friday over corruption allegations he said could be a high treason.

"We are firing all regional army commissioners," Zelensky said on social media after a meeting with the military's top leadership.

"This system should be led by people who know exactly what war is, and why cynicism and bribes in times of war is high treason," he added.
Kiev is recruiting Ukrainians into battalions for attacks on its counteroffensive against Russian forces in an effort to rid the country of a troop invasion by Moscow.

The decision reflects Ukraine's efforts to fight bribes and corruption as part of deep reforms demanded by Western institutions such as the European Union, which Ukraine hopes to join.

"During the inspection of the recruitment centers, the rule of law agencies detected cases of corruption," the Ukrainian presidency said in a press release.
The president added that these "pose a threat to Ukraine's national security and undermine confidence in state institutions."

Ukraine's Security Council recommended that the army chief select the replacements who have battlefield experience and who have been vetted by Ukrainian intelligence services. /REL
