Serbian President Alexander Vucic has stated that the September EuroPride parade in Belgrade will not take place. Vucic's announcement comes after thousands of people marched in protest against the event earlier this month.
The president said he was not happy with the decision, but that Serbia should focus on other issues, including trouble in Kosovo.
Parade organisers have said the parade will continue anyway, with any "illegal" bans. The international LGBT pride parade has been organized across European cities since 1992.
During a press conference, Vucic said this year's event - scheduled to take place between 12 and 18 September - will be "postponed or cancelled" due to "recent tensions with its former province Kosovo", as well as issues around energy and food.
"Just, at some point, you can't handle everything. At another time, at a quieter moment, the event could happen," the Serbian President said.
In response, EuroPride 2022 host Marko Mihailovic said "the state cannot cancel EuroPride" and any attempt to do so would be a "clear violation of the Constitution". Kristine Garina, president of the Association of European Pride Organisers - responsible for licensing EuroPride - insisted the event would not be cancelled.
She added that Prime Minister Anna Brnabic, Serbia's first female and gay prime minister, promised full support from the Serbian government during the 2022 EuroPride tender process, and she expects "this promise to be respected".
Earlier this month, thousands of people marched in Belgrade against EuroPride, holding signs writing "to protect the family" and "keep your hands off our children".
Far-right parties have condemned the event, and Banat Bishop Nikanor of the Serbian Orthodox Church said it would "curse all those who organise and participate in something like this".
Organisers of the event said Serbia's role as host of EuroPride was "an important step on the road to achieving equality for the LGBTI+ community in the Western Balkans".
In 2010, anti-LGBT protesters clashed with police in an attempt to thwart a Gay Pride march in Belgrade.
