More than 50 years after the last American soldier left Vietnam, US President Joe Biden traveled to Hanoi to sign a deal that will bring the former enemies closer than ever before.

The agreement, dubbed a comprehensive strategic partnership, marks a significant development in relations between the two countries, and culminates two years of Washington's efforts to strengthen ties with Vietnam, seen as key to countering China's influence in Asia.

However, Biden was careful to emphasize to reporters in Hanoi that American actions were not aimed at restraining or isolating China, but at maintaining stability in accordance with international rules.

"I don't want to contain or isolate China. I just want to make sure we have an honest and sincere relationship," said President Biden.

While in Vietnam, Biden said he held the highest-level talks with the Chinese leadership in months, as he assured Beijing's economic wobbles will not lead it to invade Taiwan.

He announced that he had met with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang at the annual G20 summit in New Delhi, with whom he said they had talked about stability and not confrontation.

Speaking at the press conference in Vietnam, Biden described the American economy as the "strongest" in the world. He told reporters that China's development was slowing due to a weak global economy as well as Chinese policies, but did not specify which policies.
