Yacht on fire

A €24m (£20m) superyacht owned by an Italian tycoon with a £400m fortune has caught fire in the middle of the sea off the coast of a Spanish island.

The 45-metre-long vessel caught fire on Thursday afternoon in Cala Saona, west of the Mediterranean island of Formentera, just a month after it was handed over to its owner.

The Spanish coastguard sent two lifeboats to the area after the nine passengers and seven crew members aboard the Aria SF abandoned ship after a Mayday call and a failed attempt to put out the fire.

Black smoke from the fire could be seen as far as the neighboring island of Ibiza.

The owner of the superyacht, which left the yard just last month after being sold in 2019, has been identified as Paolo Scudieri.

The 61-year-old is chairman of car interior components maker Gruppo Addler, which was founded by his father Achille in 1956, and his net worth is said to be around £410 million.

Father-of-four Scudieri, who lives in Naples, is Monaco's ambassador for tourism and founder of a group that owns 19 restaurants in Italy.

It was not immediately clear Friday morning if he was on board, although specialist yachting websites say the vessel is not currently available for charter.

The superyacht that was engulfed in flames had a swimming pool, five bedrooms and a gym and was due to make its official debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival later this year.

Authorities are continuing investigations to find out the cause of the fire.
