The heat wave in Europe, "Cerberus" turns on the red alert in 15

Red alert has been issued in 15 cities across Italy as extreme heat continues to affect southern Europe. The alerts, which indicate risks even to healthy people, apply to tourist hotspots including Rome, Florence and Bologna for the next few days.

Record temperatures are expected in Europe next week as another heat wave approaches.

The European Space Agency (ESA) says Italy, Spain, France, Germany and Poland could see extreme conditions. ESA monitors land and sea temperatures via its satellites.

The hottest temperature ever recorded in Europe was 48.8 degrees Celsius in Sicily in August 2021, and forecasts suggest similar levels could be reached this week.

Periods of intense heat occur within natural weather patterns, but globally they are becoming more frequent, more intense and longer due to global warming.

The Italian government has advised anyone in areas covered by Saturday's red alert to avoid the sun between 11am and 6pm and to take particular care of the elderly or vulnerable people.

Meanwhile, Greece has reached temperatures of 40C or more in recent days. The Acropolis, the country's most popular tourist attraction, was closed during the hottest hours of Friday to protect visitors.

In the country there are also fears of a greater risk of fires, especially in areas with strong winds.

High temperatures have also reached central parts of Europe, with Germany and Poland among the affected countries.

The Czech Meteorological Office issued a warning that temperatures over the weekend could reach over 38 degrees Celsius, which is unusually high for the country.
In the UK, heavy rain and strong winds are expected in parts of England on Saturday.

Earlier this week, a man in his forties died of heatstroke after collapsing in northern Italy - while several visitors to the country have collapsed in the heat, including a Brit outside the Colosseum in Rome.

The cause is the Cerberus heat wave, named by the Italian Meteorological Society after the three-headed monster that appears in Dante's Inferno.

Italian weather forecasters are warning that the next heat wave, called Charon, will push temperatures above 40C next week.

Heat waves are also being seen in parts of the US, China, North Africa and Japan.
