The Russians lost another important front in Ukraine already holding only the south and south-east of the country.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov told the BBC that the Russians had also withdrawn from the outskirts of the city and entered Russian territory.
He says Russian troops had only managed to enter a small part of the key northeastern city once and had not occupied large areas for a long time.
"The Russians were constantly bombing Kharkiv because they were very close to the city. "And because of the efforts of our army, the Russians have already withdrawn," he said.
"Now there is peace in Kharkiv and people are gradually returning to the city. We provide water, gas and electricity supply to all citizens. However, unfortunately, many residential buildings have been destroyed or damaged. "So in the future we will have to make great efforts for reconstruction."
"There has been no bombing in the city for the last five days. "There was only one attempt by the Russians to hit the city with a rocket near Kharkiv airport, but it was eliminated by the Ukrainian Air Defense."
Why does Kharkiv matter?
Ukraine has already won the battle for Kharkiv in addition to Kiev, two very important cities for the country.
Below is a summary for those who do not know the city or its importance:
But in recent weeks, an attempt by Ukrainian forces to retake areas north of the city has accelerated into a successful counterattack, pushing forces toward the border.
Military reports indicate that Russian artillery has been pushed far beyond the border and is no longer in danger of being able to bomb Kharkiv.
