US President Donald Trump announced that the US will begin using the infamous Guantanamo Bay military prison to deport illegal immigrants.
Today, during the signing of the "Laken Riley Act", to crack down on dangerous criminals, Trump said that the US will use the full capacity of the prison at Guantanamo to detain immigrants.
Trump has launched what his second administration is describing as a major crackdown on illegal migration, with raids, arrests and deportations by military aircraft of those he has labeled as illegal and highly dangerous immigrants.
The Laken Riley Act is a law that requires the Department of Homeland Security to detain illegal immigrants charged with or convicted of crimes related to theft, assault on a police officer, or a crime resulting in death or serious bodily injury such as drunk driving.
The law is named after nursing student Laken Riley, 22, who was brutally murdered by an illegal Venezuelan immigrant in February 2024. He had been detained several times in the US for crimes but had been released again until he committed the macabre crime.
The Guantanamo Bay prison has historically been used to imprison terrorists.
