A man, who had recently returned to Pakistan with his family from the US, confessed to shooting and killing his teenage daughter because he disagreed with the content of her TikTok posts.

The 15-year-old, born in the US, was shot dead on a street in the city of Quetta on Tuesday. The suspect, Anwar ul Haq, initially claimed she was shot by unknown gunmen but later confessed to the crime, a police officer said.

“So far our investigation shows that the family did not approve of the clothes she wore, her lifestyle and her contacts,” another police officer, Zohaib Mohsin, said on social media. “We have her mobile phone. It is switched off. We are investigating all possibilities, even honor killing,” he added.

The family had lived in the US for 25 years and recently returned to Pakistan's Balochistan province. According to Baloch, the father said his daughter had started creating "unacceptable" content on TikTok while they were still living in the US and continued uploading videos after they returned to Pakistan.

His brother-in-law was also arrested on charges of aiding and abetting.

Anwar ul Haq says he is a US citizen, but police have no evidence of this beyond the suspect's own statement. It is not clear whether the US embassy has been informed of his arrest.

More than 54 million people use TikTok in Pakistan, a country of 241 million people. The government has blocked access to the app several times in recent years, citing "obscene content."
