'Ndrangheta' clan hit in Italy

A superoperation by the Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Catanzaro and the ROS, with the coordination of the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Antimafia Directorate, has dismantled a mafia clan on the Ionian coast of Calabria, as well as extending to the regions of Lazio, Piedmont and Lombardy.

At least 44 arrest warrants have been issued by investigators, of which 15 carry prison sentences and 29 carry house arrest.

Among those arrested are the mayor of Badolato, a municipality in the Catanzaro area, Giuseppe Nicola Parretta, his deputy Ernesto Maria Menniti and the president of the municipal council Maicol Paparo.

"The charges are for mafia-type association (Ndrangheta), procurement of non-enforcement of sentences, arms trafficking and numerous crimes against the person and property aggravated for mafia purposes, as well as mafia-political electoral exchanges and drug violations. The procedures for the suspected types of crime are currently in the preliminary investigation phase," informs the media of the neighboring country.

It is further emphasized that there are "serious indications against the suspects, in relation to the crimes, hypothesized for various reasons". But the identities, roles and nationalities of those arrested are not yet given.

Investigators said the operation is at the beginning of preliminary investigations. Further details will be communicated during a press conference today, by the Catanzaro Prosecutor's Office.
