The Trump administration has taken steps to lay off almost 500 employees of the federally funded Voice of America (VOA) news organization.

This step is the latest in President Donald Trump's attempt to close this agency, which the White House has accused of being "radical."

The acting executive director of the Voice of America's parent agency, Kari Lake , said the decision would help reduce federal bureaucracy, improve agency service and save more hard-earned money for the American people.

A union representing employees called the move illegal in a statement to the New York Times.

The Voice of America was created during World War II to counter Nazi propaganda and has become a major global broadcaster.

The agency is overseen by the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which said a total of 532 jobs would be eliminated. Most of those employees are from Voice of America, which would be left with 108 employees, according to a court document.

In June, Lake announced that 639 employees would be laid off, although the announcements were later rescinded due to errors in the paperwork. Some employees also filed lawsuits to block the layoffs.

The announcement came a day after a judge ruled that the Trump administration had not followed proper procedures in its attempt to fire Voice of America director Michael Abramowitz.

The judge also ordered Lake to testify, where she would be questioned by lawyers. The lawsuit was filed by a group of agency employees trying to block efforts to shut down Voice of America.

" We find Lake's continued attacks on our agency repugnant ," they said in a statement to CBS News.

“We look forward to her testimony to hear whether her plan to dismantle the Voice of America has been made with the rigorous review process that Congress requires. So far we have seen no evidence of this, and as such we will continue to fight for what we believe are our rights under the law ,” they added.

Most VOA journalists have been on administrative leave since March, but some Persian-speaking staff were called back as war broke out between Israel and Iran this summer.

The announcements also will not affect journalists working at the Cuba branch of the Broadcasting Office, which broadcasts news in Spanish from Miami.

Critics say Trump's efforts to divest Voice of America constitute an attack on press freedom and affect America's ability to exercise soft power abroad. The administration has accused the outlet of being "anti-Trump" and "radical."
