Russia has reacted sharply to statements by French President Emmanuel Macron, who called Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin a "monster" during an interview with La Chaîne Info.
Macron warned European leaders not to trust Putin, stressing that for his survival, he must continue to "consume," a metaphor for his aggression against Ukraine.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the language not only irresponsible but also insulting to Russia and the Russian people. Russia has often criticized French support for Ukraine and accuses Paris of fomenting the conflict.
Macron's statements come after the historic meeting held in Washington, where he met US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders.
Macron also expressed concern that Trump may have been "tricked" by Putin in efforts to organize a peace summit between Russia and Ukraine.
White House spokesman Stephen Miller dismissed the idea, calling it an absurd suggestion and emphasizing that Trump is working tirelessly to stop the killings and advance peace.
