Turkey has taken an unprecedented step by completely severing all trade and economic relations with Israel and closing its airspace to Israeli aircraft, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced on Friday.

Turkey has also decided to ban Israeli ships from using its ports, ban Turkish ships from using Israeli ports, and impose restrictions on aircraft entering Turkish airspace.

This decision comes as a continuation of previous measures that Ankara has taken against Israel, in response to the latter's military operations in the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, the closure of Turkish airspace is expected to have direct consequences for Israeli flights to countries such as Georgia and Azerbaijan, extending travel times by almost two hours.

Israeli officials have expressed skepticism about the seriousness of this action, recalling that Turkey has previously warned of a severance of economic relations, but trade has continued informally.

Meanwhile, in the maritime transport sector, Turkish authorities are pressuring port agents to declare in writing that ships have no ties to Israel and are not carrying dangerous or military goods destined for the country. However, no official document has yet been issued to support this verbal instruction.

This move is seen as part of a broader Turkish strategy to tighten diplomatic and economic pressure on Israel over the conflict in Gaza.
