Thai politics has plunged into chaos again after the Constitutional Court's decision to dismiss Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, dealing a serious blow to the country's most powerful political dynasty.

Paetongtarn was removed from office for ethics violations after a phone call in June in which she was heard calling former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen “uncle” and criticizing the Thai military was released, at a time when border tensions between the two countries were escalating. The phone call was made public by Hun Sen himself, causing significant damage to her reputation.

In the ruling announced on Friday, the court argued that Paetongtarn had established a “personal relationship” that appeared to align with Cambodia’s interests.

The 39-year-old accepted the decision, but said her goal was to "save lives" by seeking peace.

However, just a few weeks after the conversation with Hun Sen, a conflict erupted between the two countries for almost five days, in which dozens of people were killed and hundreds of thousands were forced to flee their homes.

This is the fifth case in a row where the Constitutional Court has ousted a prime minister, since 2008.

Paetongtarn rose to power quickly, having only joined the Pheu Thai party in 2021.

Her downfall is another blow to the Shinawatra family, which has dominated Thai politics for two decades.

She becomes the third member of the family to lose office prematurely, her father Thaksin was ousted by a military coup in 2006, while her aunt Yingluck was removed from office by the Constitutional Court in 2014.

Although Thaksin has been retired from active politics for years, he remains a highly influential figure, but after this blow, it remains unclear how much power he will continue to have over the country's politics.
