US President Donald Trump has threatened Iran with bombings and new economic tariffs if Tehran does not reach a deal with Washington over its nuclear program.

In a phone interview with NBC News on Sunday, Trump said that US and Iranian officials are holding talks, but did not provide further details.

"If they don't make a deal, there will be bombing," Trump declared.

"But there is a possibility that, if they don't make a deal, I will put second tariffs on them, just like I did four years ago," Trump added.

During his first term (2017-2021), Trump withdrew the US from the 2015 deal between Iran and world powers, which imposed strict limits on Tehran's nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. He also reimposed tough sanctions on Iran. As a result, the Islamic Republic has exceeded agreed limits, escalating its uranium enrichment program.

Iran has so far rejected Trump's warning to reach a deal.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has publicly rejected holding talks with Washington over Tehran's nuclear program.

"Although the possibility of direct talks between the two sides was dismissed in this response, it was emphasized that the path to indirect talks remains open," Pezeshkian said in a televised statement on March 30.

Senior Iranian officials have previously spoken out against the idea of holding nuclear talks with the United States, and this is the first time Iran has officially rejected a US call for negotiations.

Since Trump returned to the White House, his administration has repeatedly stated that Iran must be prevented from obtaining nuclear weapons and has previously not ruled out the possibility of using military action if Iran ignores Trump's efforts at talks.

Pezeshkian's statements are expected to increase tensions between Tehran and Washington over Iran's nuclear program.

Western powers accuse Iran of secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons by enriching uranium to high levels of purity, beyond what would be justifiable for a civilian nuclear energy program.

On the other hand, Tehran insists that its nuclear program has only peaceful purposes and is dedicated exclusively to energy production.
