The terrifying prediction! The death toll from the earthquake in Myanmar could

Experts say the number of people killed in Myanmar after Friday's powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake could reach 10,000.

The current death toll is 1,700, with another 3,400 injured and 300 missing, according to pro-junta Telegram channels that run the country.

But a U.S. Geological Survey projection estimates the death toll will rise by the thousands and could reach 10,000. It also suggests that the financial losses could exceed the country's annual economic output.

Myanmar's earthquake was one of the country's strongest in a century, its military government said.

While emergency rescue teams have begun working in the area hardest hit by the earthquake, efforts have been hampered by damaged roads, collapsed bridges, poor communications and the challenges of operating in a country in the midst of a civil war.

Many areas have not yet been reached.

The earthquake struck at around 12:50 p.m. local time on Friday near Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city, at a shallow depth of six miles.

Most rescues occur within the first 24 hours after a disaster, with the chances of survival decreasing with each passing day.

Neighboring Thailand was also shaken, with 18 people killed in the capital Bangkok, including 11 who died when a skyscraper under construction collapsed. At least 76 people are missing and believed to be trapped under the rubble.
