The death toll from the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that shook Myanmar and Thailand on Friday (March 28) has risen dramatically.

The latest death toll according to authorities in the country is over 1,600 dead, 3,408 injured and 139 missing.

However, according to estimates by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the number of victims could reach 10,000. In fact, excavations continue without stopping among the rubble, searching for survivors, but more often for dead bodies.

Like the 12 children and their teacher who were evacuated from the remainder of their kindergarten, the Mandalay region, where the earthquake's epicenter was also located.

But fear and panic have not yet passed for the residents. After two more earthquakes have hit Myanmar in recent hours, after the very powerful ones (7.7 and 6.4) on Friday: at 10.20 local time (03.50 European time) the American Geoseismic Institute (USGS) recorded an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 near the capital Naypyidaw, north of Mandalay, informs "La Repubblica".

Meanwhile, the death toll in Bangkok from the earthquake has risen to 17, city authorities said. The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority said 32 people were injured and 83 were missing, mostly at the construction site of the 30-story tower that collapsed in Friday's quake.

Sniffer dogs have been called into action and are searching for survivors under the rubble of a collapsed building in Bangkok.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom has pledged £10 million in humanitarian aid to Myanmar, following an earthquake that killed more than 1,600 people and caused widespread damage across the country.
