The tragedy of Noelia Castillo/ The 25-year-old who was gang-raped and then

A serious and shocking story comes from Spain, where 25-year-old Noelia Castillo has decided to undergo euthanasia this Thursday, ending her life with a lethal injection at the rehabilitation center where she lives.

The young woman was left paraplegic after a suicide attempt in 2022, which came as a result of a gang rape she had experienced that same year. After the incident, she jumped from the fifth floor of the building where she was staying, suffering severe injuries that left her paralyzed.

Noelia comes from a dysfunctional family and spent most of her childhood in foster care, as her parents had addiction problems. In 2022, while living in a state-run center for vulnerable women, she was the victim of a gang rape. On October 4 of that year, after using cocaine, she committed the extreme act that changed her life forever.

Since then, the 25-year-old has lived in constant pain and therefore sought to exercise the right to euthanasia, which has been legal in Spain since 2021. In July 2024, a committee of experts in Catalonia approved her request and set the procedure for August 2, but the decision was suspended after an appeal by her father.

However, Noelia then appealed to the Spanish Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights. In March 2025, she declared before the court: “I want to end my life with dignity.” The decision given in February 2026 by the Constitutional Court ruled in her favor, stating that there had been no violation of her fundamental rights and that she could proceed with assisted suicide.

Just 24 hours before the procedure, Noelia gave an interview to the show Ahora Sonsoles on Antena 3, where she spoke openly about her decision.

"I want to die beautifully. I'll wear my most beautiful dress and do my hair. It'll be something simple," she said, adding that she wanted to be alone at the last moment, even though she had invited family members to say goodbye.

She described the physical and emotional pain she has experienced for years: "I want to go now and stop suffering. I don't feel like doing anything... sleeping is very difficult and I have severe pain in my back and legs."

In her story, Noelia also spoke about her difficult relationship with her family, especially with her father, emphasizing that he has not respected her decision and that communication between them has almost ceased.

Meanwhile, even though her mother had asked to be there at the last moment, the 25-year-old refused this request, preferring to leave life alone and in the way she had chosen herself.
