Scene from the scene

A serious incident occurred on Tuesday morning at Orio al Serio Airport in Bergamo, where a person lost his life after colliding with the engine of a moving aircraft.

As a result, air traffic was suspended for about an hour and a half, causing the cancellation of eight departing flights and the diversion of six arriving flights, which were directed towards Verona and Malpensa. Flights were suspended at 10:20 and resumed normally around noon.

According to initial information, the victim is a man around 35 years old, who was neither a passenger nor an airport employee.

He is said to have illegally entered the airport's inner area, using a security door in the baggage claim area, which had recently been expanded.

The man was chased by an airport employee and a border police agent, but he managed to get to the runway, where he collided with one of the plane's engines as it was performing a "pushback" maneuver, the phase of preparation for takeoff.

The plane involved in the incident was an Airbus A319 belonging to the Volotea company, which was heading to Asturias, in northwestern Spain.

Meanwhile, SACBO, the company that manages the airport, did not directly mention the incident in a statement, but stressed that investigations are underway to clarify the circumstances. An airport source confirmed to Italian media that it is a suspected suicide.

Authorities have identified a vehicle parked near the arrivals area, which is suspected to belong to the victim.
