Five Hebron sheikhs propose “West Bank Emirate” and express willingness to recognize Israel
An unusual statement by five powerful tribal sheikhs in the city of Hebron, in the southern West Bank, has caused strong reactions in the occupied Palestinian territories.
In a letter to Israeli authorities, they reject the idea of a Palestinian state and propose the creation of a "local Emirate" that would coexist with Israel and become part of the Abraham Accords.
The letter, discovered by the Wall Street Journal and later reported by the Israeli portal Ynet, was addressed to Israeli Economy Minister Nir Barkat. The signatories, including Wadi al-Jaabari, claim to represent some 600,000 residents of the West Bank and say they are willing to recognize Israel in exchange for recognition as legitimate representatives of local communities.
In the statement, they propose the creation of a joint Israeli-Palestinian industrial zone, declare "zero tolerance" for terrorism, and consider the creation of a Palestinian state impossible after the events of October 7, 2023. "Israel will never accept a Palestinian state, not even after a thousand years," Jaabari is quoted as saying.
The sheikhs harshly criticize the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and Hamas, accusing them of corruption and failed representation. “Only we can decide our fate,” they write, adding that the PLO and Hamas no longer represent Palestinian citizens.
Reactions from the Palestinian community have been immediate. The large Jaabari family, mentioned in the letter, has officially distanced itself from the initiative, stating: “These positions do not represent us. We are an integral part of Palestinian society.” Some critics have called the initiators “traitors” and accused them of collaborating with Israeli authorities for personal gain.
Meanwhile, Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, are aware of the initiative, but have so far maintained a reserved stance, due to the political sensitivity of the issue.
