Drought in Danube reveals remains of German soldiers and anti-tank mines

Extremely low water levels in the Danube River, caused by a heat wave and drought that has gripped Central Europe, have unearthed the remains of two German Wehrmacht soldiers, a military motorcycle and 35 anti-tank mines in Budapest.

The German War Graves Commission announced that its teams have exhumed the remains of two soldiers, while the discovery of anti-tank mines required the intervention of specialized explosive ordnance disposal units.

According to the organization, the lowering of river levels could lead to the discovery of more war remains, including the bodies of soldiers found on sunken ships.

The military motorcycle and two identification plates found near the discovery site have been preserved in good condition thanks to the chemical composition of the harbor mud, which has helped preserve them for more than eight decades.

The Danube has reached its lowest level ever recorded in Budapest, causing the suspension of tourist boat navigation on this segment of the river.

Experts warn that continued extreme weather conditions could reveal other historical relics left underwater since World War II.
