An unknown number of people were injured in a knife attack in Munich on Saturday evening.

The attacker was a 30-year-old woman who was shot by police and died a short time later in hospital.

According to BILD and Abendblatt, the woman attacked passersby with a knife in Theresienwiese, the site of Oktoberfest in the fall.

Police officers on patrol shot her and she was taken to the hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery, but ultimately died from her injuries.

Her motives remain unclear, while the newspaper "BILD" writes that the victim may have suffered from mental health illnesses.

In a statement, police said that "there is no longer any danger to the public," while it is not yet known how many people were injured or what their condition is.
