A Russian warplane has collided with a US surveillance drone over the Black Sea, forcing the US to shoot the drone down, the US military says.

According to the US military, the drone was conducting a routine operation in international airspace when two Russian jets attempted to neutralize it.

"The unsafe and unprofessional action of the Russians almost caused the downing of one of the fighter jets and the drone," the US Army said in a statement.
