Taiwan deploys missile systems and sends surveillance planes to border with

Taiwan's military has deployed land-based missile systems and sent planes and ships to monitor the situation, its defense ministry says.

The latest action comes after multiple Chinese ships and aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait earlier this morning.

Taiwan's defense ministry reiterated its statement that it would increase its combat readiness but would not seek war.

Earlier, Taiwan's defense ministry said that many Chinese ships and aircraft have crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait for a second day.

The median line is the informal dividing line in the Taiwan Strait between mainland China and Taiwan.

Did China fire missiles at Taiwan?

Speculation has increased that China may have launched missiles over Taiwan for the first time, writes the BBC.

Beijing launched 11 ballistic missiles into the waters around Taiwan's northeast and southwest coasts on Thursday as part of its largest-ever military drills in the region following Ms Pelosi's visit to the island.

Ballistic missiles are fired at an extremely high altitude and then follow a weak trajectory and gravity brings them to their target, reports abcnews.al.

There is no official agreement on the height at which a territory's airspace extends, suggestions range from about 30 km (19 miles) – the highest altitude at which aircraft fly – to 160 km (100 miles).

Chinese state media reported on Friday that some of the missiles had flown over Taiwan. The Army's Eastern Theater Command posted a television interview in which a professor at the National Defense University said it was the first time a missile had crossed Taiwan.

However, there has been no official statement on this so far from either the Chinese or Taiwanese governments.
