Secret service spies no. 1 in the world: The "shadow women" of the
Israeli soldier

If we sleep peacefully at night, we should thank them. If we are to win the next world war, a great deal of credit will go to these women...

Our safety of life passes into their hands, and despite the fact that they invest most of their lives for our country, you will not read articles about them in newspapers, you will not even watch them on television so that you can applaud them or you thank them for what they do. Gratitude and glory are not for them. You will not be able to identify them because they work secretly. They are the shadow women. Their minds devise daring and clever operations that make the difference between success and failure. They have improvisation skills, they have extraordinary skills, they have a sophisticated arsenal, they know several foreign languages, they have a psychological intuition. They must enter the other's mind.

These women work in the shadows and are the highest-level operatives of the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, an organization that needs no introduction thanks to its cunning and daring operations. It is not called the number one secret service in the world for nothing.

They live in the constant threat that they may lose their lives, their family, but also their freedom. They disappear from their homes, and reappear under different identities, hide, walk side by side with the enemy. It is difficult to understand the price they have to pay. A spy who is captured in an enemy country suffers from severe torture to execution. Mossad has a large number of agents employed in the main headquarters of the leadership, but the forces in the field are limited. In some cells, women represent 50% of active agents, and there are operational units in the direction of women.

Even in the most prestigious units, there are female agents with exceptional skills in the use of the most sophisticated weapons. Others work covertly to locate enemies, others by surveillance, others by handling final operations, and others by gathering secret information. Information that is received from other countries, information that gives signals about the start of a war, threats and terrorist attacks, information on the secret plans of the Syrian President Assad and the Iranian President. The goal is to discover their tactical plans (any terrorist attack) and strategies (nuclear weapons).

The Mossad seeks by all means to block from the east any action planned against them: from terrorist acts to illegal accords, from strategic movements such as Iran's nuclear weapons programs to the supply of missiles to Hezbollah and hostile countries. Even if the target takes a different direction, the Mossad follows.

They all seem like coincidences, but behind the scenes, a lot of work is done in gathering information, analyzing it, at the end of which the action aimed at extinguishing the danger begins.

Female agents lead a chameleon life. One day you can see her walking normally on the street wearing miniskirts, another day dressed as a high-class business woman, and another day you can see her transformed as a street vendor dressed in rags. These women do not have an office: they work in the field. They are homeless women in suits. Always on the road, they constantly change their identities, and they did everything in enemy countries.

Their work is deeply physical and predictable. A secret operative can go five days and five nights without sleeping for a single minute. They don't want to miss the target in any way. They must always be on the lookout, they must not fall asleep, nor be caught. The Israeli army is characterized by masculine character and heroism.

But in the Mossad, female heroism is no less powerful than male heroism, they have been working in secret for generations, and for years these female fighters have been denied their names as heroines in history.

The world has never heard before from the female Mossad spies who have been crucial to some of the agency's greatest triumphs.

But now five of them have spoken for the first time, telling Israeli magazine Lady Globes, about their extraordinary lifestyle that makes them feel like they're "living in a movie".

They talk for the first time

Now, for the first time in history, after long and rather complex negotiations, we managed to get a special permit to interview 5 female Mossad agents, high-profile agents. All interviewees hold the position of "commander" in the Israel Defense Forces, this rank is equivalent to that of colonel of brigadier general. So, for the first time in history, you will read the interviews of the most skilled secret service agents in the world.

You meet is a surprise in itself. They are quite different than you might imagine. All of them, it should be underlined, are mothers and have families, and at the same time lead teams of agents in various fields such as: interception, contacts with hostile ethnicities. Agents operating in hostile countries are exposed to greater risks than those operating in non-hostile countries...

The names of the interviewees are pseudonyms for the safety of their lives

Efrat: " If I was doing my job in an enemy country and if I was discovered, my life would end. But it is not so different from someone who is arrested in a friendly country and spends the rest of his life in prison. The willingness to be willing to sacrifice for the good of our country is something that unites us all."

Efrat is deputy chief of a division, the highest-ranking female commander inside the Mossad. She has had under her command military diplomats of combat elites and fighter pilots. During a mission, she met the man who later became her husband. The couple, still in active service, has three children. For the results achieved, he received the "l'Israel Security Prize", a prize for Israel's security.

Yael: " Female Mossad agents, doing their job outside of the state of Israel, in any country, in any weather, even if they have a sick child, know that they are putting their lives on the line. danger to one's freedom".

Inside the organization, Yael is a legend (they say about her: this girl has been to every corner of the Earth and completed operational missions with great bravery, both alone and inside the squad, for many years. She attributed to extraordinary operations in the field of intelligence). "I worked hard to continue the operative service even after I became a mother," she says. "Before when I joined the Mossad, when you became a mother you were transferred like some kind of house plant. It took many years for them to accept my request to send me to active duty overseas. The commander told me: I am not ready to take on the responsibility of returning a mother home".

Shira : "It is not easy to recruit Israeli women for the Mossad. When newlyweds arrive, resistance in the family is frequent. When their partner agrees, they don't know what they're doing. Or they seek to set impossible limits".

They are made strong and tough

In recent years, women have reached quite high positions within the Mossad. The woman with the highest position was deputy director under Shabtai Shavit, who was director general of the Mossad from 1989 to 1996. Thanks to the experience, the organization realized that thanks to the special contribution made by women, they now seek to strengthen the female presence in the organization.

How has this extreme experience changed you?

Ella: Over time we have become stronger, tougher, and this reality worries me. The standard here is high. If you are hesitant about anything, then everything falls to pieces."

Ella is 38 years old and has three children. "When I leave behind me all the nice things, like the warmth of home, and go and risk my life leaving my husband and children sleeping safely in their beds, I feel my eyes fill with tears and a dagger in my throat a stalemate. When I compare the comfort of my home with the riskiness of the action I feel bad in my heart. When during the holiday of Lag Ba'omer (Israeli holiday) I left my operational duties for just a few hours to be with the children. I was the only woman at that party wearing heels, and I told myself on the other hand that I was probably the only mother who was under Mossad service. For me, being part of the organization represents a great privilege. It means that I have been given a great honor, and at the same time a heavy responsibility".

Shira: "It's like living in a movie, always fit. It's crazy. I say to myself: It's unbelievable that I'm doing this. I thought only Superman could do it, really special people. Suddenly I happen to find myself in actions that are only seen in spy movies. It is the most amazing experience of life. Anyone who has the opportunity to do it, should try it."

Ella: “Consider a quality spy movie that also has action. What you see in the movies, even more than that, really happens in our lives, even in more difficult ways. I'm living a movie that hasn't been shot yet. I participated in the most difficult actions that you usually see in the cinema. In an action movie it lasts only five minutes, ours lasts with me. It is a challenge, both from a physical point of view, but also from an intellectual and emotional point of view. In your head you are only focused on fighting the enemy. Think about how to overcome difficulties and do the impossible".

Efrat: "We have been taught that nothing is impossible. There is only one situation for which we have not yet found a solution: the desire to cross our limits to be the best every day and to do what is called "impossible" every day, and to like it. That if you don't like it, you can't do it."

Nirit: " In my family, they fail to understand the reason that exactly when you got your doctorate, I decided to abandon everything and dedicate myself to Mossad missions."

Yael: "When I was recruited, they told me: 'It's a job that no paratrooper or Air Force pilot is capable of doing, the way you can do it.' I asked them: What is it about? And their answer was: 'You will be the eye of Israel in the enemy states.' I was excited: in those words I discovered an incredible opportunity."

You put your lives in danger, making great sacrifices, paying a very salty price, but no one is aware of what you do. How do you feel about that?

Yael: “It's hard. In fact, we live in a society that is founded on appearances, where everyone says what they do, everyone except us."

Nirit: "It is something that makes us feel like people with values, so it is not necessary for external confirmations. You manage to live by understanding that the work you are doing is the best possible, even without the need for thanks from society."

Shira: “Contrary to what you stated in your question, in my opinion, this is a job with high components of selfishness. I feel like I'm in the best place that excites me. My self-confidence has increased. Before I came here, my self-esteem was very low. Before, if I entered the place where there were other people, I would shake my husband's hand tightly, but after going through the selection process, the security within me has increased to a very high degree. This work radically changes your personality. Now I don't feel anxiety in any field. Now I find it quite easy to make decisions and make my voice heard".

Find yourself in dire situations. How do you keep fear at bay?

Efrat: "They teach us to remove anxiety as much as possible. In the middle of an action, we are not focused on fear, but how to achieve the best possible end of the action successfully, otherwise fear becomes paralyzing".

Nirit: "Fear is a form of protection. I know you are facing a threat and you have to overcome it, fear prevents you from taking idiotic actions. Your safety is based on having taught them how to cope

How do you live with murder?

"Don't the soldiers go out and shoot? We are also in an army. Although in the shadows, we are an army. We go to places where the army cannot go. We are the first line of defense of the country".

You don't have the opportunity to share the extreme experiences you go through with the people close to you. Is this something you're crazy about?

Yael: " There are experiences that I can share with my husband, but there are also those that I have not shared with anyone until today. The security of my country is in my hands and I cannot talk about information that could be dangerous. They won't come out of my mouth for any reason in the world."
