Ratko Mlladic, the former leader of the Bosnian Serbs convicted of war crimes in the 1990s conflict, has been hospitalized in serious condition.
In a short telephone conversation with AFP in Belgrade, his son, Darko Mlladiq, confirmed this information.
He said that Mladic, 79 years old, has been hospitalized for a week due to his fragile state of health. He was initially in the civil hospital in The Hague and since Thursday he is in the prison health facility of the International Mechanism for Criminal Courts based in The Hague.
The son of the war criminal told the media that Serbia had prepared a team of doctors to visit him in The Hague, but was waiting for the permission of the prison authorities.
The Hague prison did not comment on the case.
Ratko Mladic has been sentenced to life in prison for war crimes, including his role in the Srebrenica Massacre, where at least 8,000 Bosnian men were killed.
