The floods in Libya

The tragic floods in Libya are reaching biblical proportions. At least 6,000 people have lost their lives due to floods in the city of Derna.

Authorities in Libya and the Red Cross warn that this figure could double due to the large number of people declared missing, over 10,000.

"It's like judgment day," says a local journalist, adding that the water took everything away, leaving behind only destruction. The flooding came after two dams in the coastal city burst due to overflow from storm Daniel's heavy rains.

Over 30,000 people have been left without homes, while many countries are providing humanitarian aid and sending rescue teams. Libya is a state divided between two rival governments, with one operating from Tripoli and the other in the east.
