The event in Piraeus

Ferry crews boycotted work on Wednesday morning (13 September), launching a 24-hour strike to show solidarity with the family of a passenger drowned by their colleagues on the Horizonti Blu ferry last week.

Antonis Karyotis, 36, drowned in the port of Piraeus last Tuesday after being pushed into the water by three ferry crew members as he tried to board as the ferry had just left for Crete.

In a statement, the Panhellenic Federation of Seafarers (PNO), condemned the incident and informed that the actions of the three employees of the Blue Horizon contradict the professional and moral standards of the sector.

The police are investigating the case. From the audio recordings it is revealed that one of the crew members accused of pushing the passenger who then drowned in the port of Piraeus after the incident told his captain: "I thought he was black, Pakistani".

The audio recordings, released by MEGA Television, capture dialogues between the captain and his crew on the Blue Horizon shortly after Antonis Karyotis was pushed off the ship's loading ramp and drowned. In the audio, the deceased is labeled as a "stupid" by the crew. "I thought he didn't have a ticket. I thought he was black, Pakistani, because he was there, walking around the ship. But he didn't show us any tickets. All he said to me was 'I'm going to Crete,'” the crew member who pushed him is heard saying in the audio.
