The Ministry of Justice of Serbia told Radio Free Europe that Artan Zymberi, a Norwegian citizen from Kosovo, who died in a prison in Serbia on November 27, "refused to be treated for an illness he had."

The media in Kosovo, in recent days, have reported that family members of the deceased have expressed doubts that Zymberi, 28 years old, may have been killed because of several tattoos on his body, such as those with the figure of Adem Jashari - killed by Serbian forces during the war in Kosovo in 1998 - the eagle and the emblem of the Kosovo Liberation Army.

The Ministry of Justice of Serbia announced that from February 3 of this year, Zymberi was serving a prison sentence in Sremska Mitrovica, with a duration of three years and eight months, for the criminal offense: unauthorized production and distribution of narcotics.

He was previously sentenced to detention, also in Sremska Mitrovica, where he has been since April 29, 2021. It is not clear how he came to be arrested in Serbia.

The Serbian ministry said that when Zymberi was taken into custody, she stated that she was being treated for a "certain type of illness," but she said she could not specify more because of the Law on Personal Data and Protection and Law on health care.

The ministry also said that Zymberi did not have medical documentation with him, but that he was checked several times by a doctor and that, based on his condition, he received adequate therapy. The Serbian ministry said he had "full medical care" and "regular check-ups".

According to her, Zymberi, while serving his sentence, was referred several times to a special prison hospital in Belgrade. He was said to have refused medication and food on several occasions.

For the last time, he stayed in this special hospital from July 28 to September 17 of this year. After this period, he was returned to the prison in Sremska Mitrovica with instructions for therapy and further treatment, which "this convict resolutely refused".

It is added that Zymberi was visited by representatives of the Norwegian Embassy in Belgrade. She was sent to the prison in Sremska Mitrovica to provide psycho-social support, as Zymberi had not agreed to communicate with the institution's employees, nor with the doctor and others./ REL
