In a long article, the American newspaper "New York Times" puts together the pieces of a puzzle, which for the first time links the Russian hacking of the 2016 US presidential election to the introduction of Putin's tanks into Ukraine.

"Il Russiagate" and the current war, united in an international entanglement, in which Trump and Putin appear as business partners. The date it all started is July 28, 2016. The evening Hillary Clinton accepted the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, Donald Trump's campaign manager, attorney and lobbyist Paul Manafort, received a secret e-mail from Moscow.

The person in question was a business partner, Konstantin Kilimnik, a Russian citizen with ties to the Russian military, who ran Manafort's consulting firm in Kiev. Kilimnik was asking for a personal meeting with him.

The coded message was “caviar,” a reference to a former client who had given him a memorable jar of caviar at a cost of $30,000: That famous client was ousted Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, the man who escaped to Russia in 2014 after the Maidan Square protests.

After 5 days the two met at the Grand Havana Room, an exclusive club located on the 39th floor of one of the skyscrapers at 666 Fifth Avenue. Kilimnik told Manafort a secret plan, called "Mariupol", which involved the invasion of Ukraine by Putin, and the creation of an autonomous republic in the east of the country.

According to the "New York Times", its president would be Yanukovych again. The Russians were sure that if Trump became president thanks to the Kremlin, this plan would not encounter any obstacles. In the coming weeks, Russian hackers would escalate their attacks to damage Clinton and help Trump win the election.

Among the cited documents is the "mother text" of it all: a 2005 memo sent by Manafort to a Russian oligarch close to Putin, Oleg Deripaska, cited in a Senate Intelligence Committee report.

Manafort promoted the brotherhood pact with Yanukovych and showed the strategy of how he could win the election. A model that, according to him, could "bring great benefits to Putin's government". It was under Manafort's protective wing that Yanukovych won the presidential election.

Six years later, the second part of the story would also be revealed: Trump's adviser Manafort. Kilimnik, was his contact person and connection with the Kremlin. The American tycoon completely sidelined the establishment as he gave lukewarm support to NATO, saying that defending Ukraine from a Russian invasion was not worth it, risking the start of World War III.

He then said he would consider recognizing Crimea as a Russian territory. Military aid to Kiev was blocked by Trump's national security adviser, JD Gordon. Therefore, the 4 years of the mandate in the White House would be a phase of a significant rapprochement with Moscow.

But Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 elections complicated the Kremlin's plans, although it did not stop the Russian president from implementing his plans. Shortly before leaving the White House, Trump pardoned Manafort, convicted of falsifying the bankruptcy of his businesses and defrauding the FBI. 13 months later, Putin, even without his friend in Washington, decided on a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
