Zelensky is declared 'Person of the Year' by the prestigious magazine

Today, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has been announced as "Man of the Year" for 2022 by the American magazine 'Time'.

Since the beginning of the war, Zelensky, 44 years old, has been called a hero by his own people and abroad, foreign media report.

Zelensky beat other candidates including Chinese President Xi Jinping, US politician Liz Cheney and billionaire MacKenzie Scott.

The magazine gave him this award because he has had the greatest global influence over the past 12 months, foreign media reports.

Two days ago, Zelensky was also named "Man of the Year" in the British newspaper Financial Times, which devoted a long article to the Ukrainian president.

He has also over the past year been hailed as a symbol of defiance and democracy as he continues to lead the nation through Russia's unprovoked attacks on Ukraine.

The "first person of the year" was in 1927 the American aviator Charles Lindbergh, who was given the title after making the first non-stop transatlantic flight from New York to Paris.
