In a coal mine in the north of Turkey, there was an explosion at a depth of 300 meters. At least 28 people have lost their lives, dozens more are considered missing.

Accidents in Turkish mines are not uncommon, but the latest strong explosion at a coal mine in northern Turkey on Friday (14.10.) claimed the lives of at least 25 people. The announcement about the tragedy came from the Governor's Office of Bartin Province in the Black Sea at dawn on Saturday, Anadolu Agency wrote.

6 injured miners were hospitalized. But there are still thought to be dozens of other miners trapped deep inside the mine.

The explosion at a depth of 300 meters was probably caused by the mixture of gas released in the mine, local Turkish media reports. Hundreds themselves are taking part in the rescue operation.

According to the data of the Turkish Interior Minister, Süleyman Soylu, 110 miners were inside the mine at the time of the tragedy, 49 of them in a more vulnerable deep part. 36 miners were rescued.

Turkish President Erdogan announced that he will visit the site of the disaster on Saturday to coordinate aid measures and that the investigation into the tragedy has begun.

But the opposition social democratic party, CHP, has said that the authorities have ignored a report of the court of auditors from 2019, in which it was warned of an explosion due to the mixed gas released in the depths of this mine. Due to the lack of safety measures in Turkish mines there have been several serious accidents. In an explosion in the coal mine in Manisa Province in the Aegean region in 2014, 304 people lost their lives.
