Under the European Sky Shield initiative, 15 countries, including Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, will jointly purchase the most modern air defense systems.
Germany and 14 other countries launched a project to build a better European air defense system, writes Deutsche Welle
In the framework of the NATO meeting in Brussels, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht and her colleagues signed a declaration on the European Sky Shield Initiative.
The signing ceremony was attended by representatives of Hungary, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Belgium and Great Britain.
This initiative aims to eliminate the shortcomings of NATO's current shield for Europe, according to DW, as it is said to have shortcomings when it comes to high-altitude ballistic missiles, but also in defense against drones and cruise missiles.
DW writes that in the background of the German initiative is the Russian war against Ukraine, that NATO estimates that this war fundamentally changed the security situation in Europe and that therefore additional efforts are needed to improve air defense.
Until now, European air defenses have mainly focused on potential threats from Iran.
As part of the initiative, the European Sky Shield, among other things, must buy joint weapon systems, which are cheaper and thus cover a large area.
"This is how we fulfill our shared responsibility for security on our continent," Lambrecht said at the meeting in Brussels.
For short-range and anti-aircraft and anti-helicopter warfare, Germany currently has Stinger shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles, which have also been delivered to Ukraine.
For medium distances there is the Patriot system.
Germany has a total of 12 such systems, but they are far from enough to protect the entire country.
When it comes to defense against high-altitude ballistic missiles, the Bundeswehr has virtually no choice, DW writes, noting that the solution may be the Israeli Arrow 3 system, and that Berlin is considering the purchase of other Patriot and IRIS systems. -T.
