Explosion in Moscow

Local officials in Russia say at least 43 people have been injured in an explosion at an optics plant in the town of Sergiyev Posad, about 70 kilometers (9 miles) from Moscow, on August <>.

Six of the injured are under intensive care due to severe burns and head injuries, according to the city administration. Some of the 43 people admitted to a regional hospital have suffered injuries from metal chips.

The independent Telegram channel, Baza, shared a video showing a large cloud of smoke and identified the hit building as Zagorsk's Optical and Mechanical Plant, which produces night vision tools and other optical tools for the military.

Russian officials later confirmed this.

Russia's TASS news agency quoted emergency services as denying news on social media that the explosion was a drone attack.

The speculation was fueled by drone strikes in Moscow in recent months, which Moscow blamed on Kiev, as well as Russian reports that it had prevented two new drone attacks near Moscow on the night of August 8.

TASS reported that the explosion occurred at the site where pyrotechnic tools were being kept and that a large warehouse was destroyed.

A sudden fire had damaged the same Zagorsk plant in June 2022.
