Russia retaliates by striking with ballistic missiles

Russia has hit Ukraine with intercontinental ballistic missiles. The news was announced by the military forces of Ukraine. If confirmed, this would be the first time Moscow has used such a powerful weapon, which can carry both nuclear and conventional warheads.

While it is not officially specified what the missile contained, a military source told the AFP news agency that it was not carrying a nuclear warhead.

For its part, Russia did not comment on the statement of the Ukrainian Air Force. Asked by reporters about the development, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told them to contact the Russian military for comment. Meanwhile, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, confirmed the Russian attack with ICBMs.

"Today was a new Russian missile. All the characteristics – speed, altitude – are of an intercontinental ballistic missile. An expertise is currently being developed. It is clear that Russian President Vladimir Putin is using Ukraine," Zelensky said.

ICBMs are designed to carry nuclear warheads and have a minimum range of 5,500 kilometers.

Sources and experts, however, said it was "clear" that the missile that hit Ukraine did not carry a nuclear warhead, indicating that Russia launched it primarily for political effect.

"Today, our crazy neighbor has shown once again who he really is - and how he despises dignity, freedom and human life in general. And how scared he is," said Zelensky.

The reaction came after Ukraine attacked Russia with Franco-British Storm Shadow missiles, the latest Western weaponry the Ukrainian military has been allowed to use against Russian targets, a day after it launched US ATACMS missiles. The attacks were reported by Russian war correspondents on Telegram, and confirmed by an official on condition of anonymity.

In parallel with the developments in Ukraine, Russia also threatened Poland, a member of NATO, due to the fact that the US opened a missile base there on November 13 near the coast of the Baltic Sea.

"This step fits into the long-term destructive practice of dragging NATO's military infrastructure close to Russia's borders. It clearly leads to damage to strategic stability, along with other harmful moves of a military, political and technical nature, aimed at projecting American military power away from the US national territory, to put pressure on Russia," said Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman. of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

At the press conference, Maria Zakharova emphasized that Russia is ready to consider any "realistic" peace initiative for the conflict in Ukraine, which takes into account Russia's interests and the situation on the ground.
