"OCCRP was commissioned by USAID to overthrow President Donald Trump"

How did we end up getting this kind of attention? Old-fashioned investigative journalism.

In 2019, we wrote a simple article about how Rudy Giuliani went to Ukraine for some opposition research and ended up working with people connected to organized crime who defrauded him. A whistleblower, unknown to us, read the article online and added it to the complaint he filed, which later became the basis for President Trump's first impeachment.

We have also written about Hunter Biden's business partners and their connections to organized crime, but this has not received the same attention.

Journalism has become a blood sport. It is increasingly difficult to tell the truth without violating someone else's interests. OCCRP prides itself on being an independent and nonpartisan network. No donor has any say in our reporting, but we often find ourselves under attack because of our funders.

It is not just political interests, but organized crime, businesses, enablers, and other journalists who regularly attack us. What is common in all these attacks is that the truth does not matter and does not protect you. Few are those who attack the facts in our reporting. So we are stunned and at a loss as to how to respond to conspiracy theories, disinformation, and rampant hatred.

Meanwhile, we have lost 29% of our funding due to the US foreign aid freeze. That includes 82% of the money we give to newsrooms in our network, many of which operate in countries where no one else will support them. This money not only funded innovative, award-winning collaborative journalism, but also trained young investigative journalists. It is the money that has protected journalists from physical and digital attacks and supported those in exile who have continued to report on crime and dictators in their own countries. OCCRP now has 43 fewer journalists on staff.

We will strive to fulfill our mission, and no attack or funding freeze will stop us. Just last week, OCCRP and its partners revealed how the Russian shadow fleet secures its ships, how Roman Abramovich doesn’t pay taxes on his yachts, and how Syrian intelligence spied on journalists. Next week, we’ll take on another group of powerful actors to protect the public interest. And another group the week after that.

We are determined to stay in the fight and continue reporting on organized crime and the corrupt who enable and benefit from it. But it is getting harder and we need help.

Now more than ever, this fight is an existential fight for investigative reporting. We ask you to support OCCRP and its network.
