Protests resume in Serbia! The opposition demands the cancellation of the

Opponents of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić rallied Friday evening (January 26, 2024) outside the Constitutional Court building to demand that last month's election be annulled due to widespread irregularities reported by local observers and international, AP writes.

The group "Serbia against violence" accuses the government of President Vucic of organizing a fraud in the December 17 parliamentary and local elections, especially in Belgrade, the Serbian capital. President Vucic has denied the accusations.

The State Election Commission has declared the Serbian Progressive Party of Vučić the winner of the elections and rejected the opposition's complaints, while the Constitutional Court has not yet decided on the complaints.

About 2,000 protesters also marched on the headquarters of Serbia's public broadcaster RTS, which they accuse of pro-government stances.

Opposition politician Radomir Lazovic said that "this is everyone's battle because everyone loses with this (misuse of votes)".

International election observers reported cases of vote-buying and ballot-box stuffing and said Serbian elections were generally held under "unfair conditions."

Opposition parties and independent local election observers have claimed that voters were bussed to Belgrade to cast their ballots for the ruling party after registering at false addresses.

Thousands of people protested for days in late December, accusing President Vucic of stealing votes. Police fired tear gas and arrested dozens of people after protesters tried to enter Belgrade's city hall at one of the demonstrations.

Although President Vučić says he wants to lead Serbia towards membership in the European Union, critics accuse the populist leader of imposing an autocracy by taking control of the main media and all state institutions, AP writes.
