Twins Amy and Ano

Twins Amy and Ano look like drops of water, but soon after birth they were taken from their mother and sold to different families. Years later, they discovered each other by chance thanks to a TV talent show and a TikTok video. While investigating their past they realized that they were not the only babies who had been stolen from Georgia hospitals and sold, as one of the last cases was recorded in 2005. Now they want answers.

Amy paces back and forth in the corridor of a hotel in Leipzig. "I'm scared, I haven't slept at all. This is my chance to learn what happened to us."

Her twin sister, Ano, shows a video on her cell phone. “This is the woman who might have sold us out,” she says as she tries to control her nervousness.

The two sisters have traveled from Georgia to Germany to discover the final puzzle of their story, their biological mother.

In the last two years they have spoken to many people in Georgia who were stolen from the hospital as babies and sold to other families. No one has reported yet.

Amy and Ano discovered each other shortly after they turned 12.

Amy Khvitia was at her godmother's house watching the talent show 'Georgia's Got Talent' on television, where a dancing girl looked just like her.

Amy was surprised and showed it to her family, but they ignored it.

Seven years later in 2021, Amy posted a video of herself piercing her ears on TikTok.

300 km away in the capital Tbilisi, another 19-year-old, Ano Sartania, came across the video and said "how nice that you look like me".

Ano started searching the net for the girl who looked so much like him and consequently found her on Facebook.

Even Amy immediately recognized that Ano was the girl she had seen a few years ago on the talent show.

Contacting online, the two girls discovered that they had a lot in common, they were born in Kirtskhi maternity hospital, which no longer exists, but according to the birth certificates they were two weeks apart.

They had a lot in common and liked the same things, and even had a genetic bone disease called dysplasia.

“Every time I learned something new about Ano, things got weirder,” says Amy.

A week later they met for the first time and Amy says it was a mirror image of herself. She knew they were sisters.

"I don't hug people, but I hugged him", says Ano.

They insisted with their families and finally learned the truth, that they were adopted separately weeks apart in 2002.

Both were initially angry with their families as Ano says that "I just wanted this difficult conversation to end and we could move on with our lives".

Amy's mother, who could not give birth to a child, was told that she was an unwanted baby in the hospital, which if she "paid the doctors" she could take and raise as her own.

Ano's mother was told a similar story.

The families did not know that the girls were sisters and paid a lot of money without knowing that they were doing something illegal. None of the families would say how much they paid in bribes, but reports say nearly a year's salary in Georgia.

The twins wondered if their biological parents had sold them for money, although in fact the macabre act was carried out by doctors. "Would you meet the person who abandoned us?", she asks.

In a missing children group on Facebook, Amy found families of stolen and illegally adopted children.

A woman in Germany responded by saying she had given birth to twins at the Kirtskhi hospital in 2002 and although she was told they had died, she had always suspected.

The Facebook group had many posts from Georgian mothers who had been told their babies had died, only to discover that the deaths had not been registered so they could be alive.

At the hotel in Leipzig, Amy and Ano prepare to meet their biological mother, but they are not sure. Ano says that he has changed his mind, but after a while he comes back again.

Their biological mother, Aza, is waiting in another room.

Amy enters first and Ano follows her.

Aza hugs them gently, as neither of them speak.

The three then sit down to talk privately.

In 2022, the Georgian government launched investigations into the trafficking of newborn babies to hospitals.

They told the BBC that they have spoken to more than 40 people but the cases are "old and the data has been lost". The case activist who helped the sisters and many others with the case, Tamuna Museridze, says she has notified the government but has not received a response.

She adds that a 2003 investigation into international child trafficking resulted in several arrests but the information has not been made public.

While in 2015, it was reported that after an investigation, the director of Rustavi's hospital, Aleksandre Baravkovi, was arrested, but then he was found innocent and returned to his workplace.

The BBC writes that it was interested in the Ministry of the Interior, which said that it did not provide details of data protection.
