The President of the European Council has been in the spotlight recently after he announced his candidacy for the European Parliament elections, implying that he could leave the position he currently holds.

However, on Friday afternoon, Michel announced that he will withdraw from the race. The head of the European Council confirmed the news through a post on his social media.

"I will not run for the European elections. I will devote myself to the responsibilities I currently hold with unwavering determination until they are completed. I will always be a staunch supporter of a Europe that is democratic, strong, united and sovereign in its own destiny," he wrote on Facebook.

As the former Belgian prime minister says, at the end of his mandate he will reflect on the nature and direction of his future obligations.

Charles Michel's surprise decision to run in June's European parliamentary elections, which would have meant leaving office months before the end of his term, sparked furious reactions among EU officials, European diplomats and Parliament.

Officials perceived his surprise announcement as a signal that he placed more importance on his political future than his current role as head of the European Council.

Michel's move also put pressure on European leaders to find a compromise on key EU posts.

If elected as a member of the European Parliament, which was highly likely if he ran, Michel would have to take office in mid-July, opening the door for Hungary's Eurosceptic Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to temporarily chair the meetings of EU leaders.
