US President Donald Trump reportedly vetoed an Israeli plan to assassinate Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a US official told Fox News on Sunday.

Details of the assassination attempt and when Trump denied it have yet to be confirmed.

"Have the Iranians killed any Americans yet? Until they do that, we are not talking at all about pursuing the political leadership," said a source, a senior US administration official who spoke to Reuters.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also spoke about the plan.

"There are so many false reports of conversations that never happened, and I will not go into that," Netanyahu said.

"But I can tell you, I think we do what we have to do, we will do what we have to do. And I think the United States knows what's good for the United States," he added.
