The EU Drugs Agency has warned of a proliferation of new psychoactive substances being sold and consumed in Europe.
Europe is "swimming" in drugs. In the first sense of the word, according to the 2022 Report of the European Observatory on Drugs and Addictions.
One of the parameters was the analysis of water in European metropolises, which showed a record presence of cocaine, but also methamphetamine and other narcotics, especially synthetic ones.
Although during the two-year pandemic, drug use has never been exhausted, in recent months it has experienced a significant increase, also because of the ease with which these illegal substances can already be found on the market. "Narcotics have never been so accessible, social media apps and cryptocurrencies seem to be the most used instruments," said Alxis, Goosdeel, director of the Observatory.
In addition to traditional drugs, it adds new substances day by day. In 2021 at least 52 new species, mainly synthetic, were signaled, of which almost 7 tons were seized, mainly from India, a country that has taken the lead in the production of these substances after China has strictly closed its borders due to COVID -19.
Clearly, cocaine remains the "queen" of drug trafficking in Europe and beyond. According to estimates, its market in the EU goes up to 13 billion euros, about 1/3 of all narcotics trafficking. Seizures of 240 tons of cocaine in 2021 alone, a record for all time, shows the dimensions of the trafficking of illegal white powder, but growing by 477% is the market of methamphetamines, which have as European and world production centers the Republic Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Belgium.
"It is disturbing that partnerships between international criminal organizations have resulted in such a large cocaine availability, almost on an industrial scale," said European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson, commenting on the report.
