Citizens in South Korea will become a year younger, the country's new president Yoon Sook-geol announced today.

One of the priorities of the head of the country, as he said during the pre-election campaign, has been to offer the citizens a "year of life".

South Korea has a different system of measuring age than the rest of the world.

According to the "Korean" age system, a person turns one year old on the day of birth. It then grows by one year every January 1st, every New Year, regardless of date of birth.

But from now on Koreans will calculate age like the whole world. This traditional method of determining age has been used in many East Asian countries in the past, including China and Japan.
