Chinese President responds to Trump: Trade war with US will have no winners
Xi Jinping

Chinese President Xi Jinping warned on Tuesday that a trade war with the United States would result in no winners, state media reported.

Xi made these statements shortly before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump in January.

Trump, a former US president, has pushed forward the trade war with China throughout his first term in the White House, and has accused the country of intellectual property theft and other "unfair" practices.

He has vowed to impose even higher tariffs on China in his second term, as Beijing continues to face a slow economic recovery after the coronavirus pandemic.

"Tariff wars, trade wars and technology wars are against economic trends, economic rules, and there can be no winners," Xi said of China-US relations, after a meeting with heads of financial institutions in Beijing.

"China is willing to continue dialogue with the US government, expand cooperation, manage differences, and promote China-US relations in a stable, healthy and sustainable direction," Xi said.

Beijing aims to record annual growth of 5 percent this year, despite falling domestic consumption and high unemployment. /REL
