Elon Musk hit back at his critics after being accused of making a "Nazi salute" during a speech at Donald Trump's inauguration.

The head of X and Tesla caused outrage among many after some said he had made a Roman salute with his arm raised in front of Trump supporters.

Responding to the criticism, Musk accused his enemies of engaging in "dirty tricks" to smear him.

“'Everyone is Hitler' is such a tiresome attack,” he added in a post on X, accompanied by a sleep emoji.

Musk made the apparent gesture while speaking at the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, where he was addressing Trump supporters after the inauguration.

During the speech, he put his hand to his chest and said he felt it in his “heart.”

Speaking of his excitement about the prospect of landing a man on Mars from America, the billionaire and SpaceX boss pounded his chest with his right arm before raising it skyward.

Then, he turned his back to the audience and repeated the gesture, looking at an American flag hanging behind him.

"Thanks to you, the future of civilization is secured," he told the gathered supporters.

The apparent gesture immediately caused reactions and confusion among critics.

"You saw him come out with that weird greeting," said CNN host Erin Burnett.
